        Tips Eigenaar

Montorfano is an ancient hamlet with a secular history. What makes it known all over the world and that marked his vicissitudes is the building block of the mountain : the famous white granite of Montorfano. This great quarry has for centuries provided the stone for major structures all over Italy. As an example, in 1830 stone was quarried to build the 82 columns of the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura, and transported to Rome on a lengthy journey entirely by water. The same granite was used to build the little Romanesque Church of San Giovanni Battista (John the Baptist) in the hamlet of Montorfano, one of the most interesting and best preserved Many archaeological finds from here and other sites in the area are kept in the Antiquarium Museum in Mergozzo. Mergozzo is one of the prettiest lakeside villages in the Lake Maggiore area. Picturesquely situated on the shore of Lake Mergozzo, separated from Lake Maggiore due to the continual flooding of the River Toce, the village is a favourite holiday destination from the spring on. The stone houses huddle close together, separated only by narrow lanes. The central square of the village is dominated by an ancient elm tree: historical documents attest that the tree was growing in the square as many as 400 years ago. Now completely hollow, it has been given the title of a “monumental tree of Piedmont”. A number of walks in the countryside start from Montorfano, such as the “Sentiero Azzurro” (Blue Trail) to the hamlet of Mergozzo along a track beside the lake. Mergozzo’s beaches are very popular with visitors and local people alike, and provide facilities like beach volleyball, a playground for children and a bar. Getting around The attractive elements of the village are the Romanesque church of 1300, to which was added what was a Protestant church , built in 1800 , due to a schism among the inhabitants of the village. The latter has become a center for a scout groups. With a short walk through the village's alley, you’ll reach the “Belvedere” , from where there are a magnificent views over Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta; to a short distance you’ll find a small farm with animals too. Finally, on the way to reach the top of the mountain, you will find the old trenches and barracks built by General Cadorna, during the first world war, to guard the area. During the resistance these were used by partisans. For climbing’s lovers, but suitable for beginners too, you’ll find the "Rock Horse": a real natural gym of granite. On the southern slope of the mountain are reported instead many walls in varying difficulty. Don’t miss also numerous trails through the woods, including the “blue path” , that reach Mergozzo city hugging the coast of the lake with the same name. Also in this site you find the association “Somariamente " which organizes various activities with donkeys, suitable for families. Other Things to Note The Lake Maggiore’s area offers so many opportunities and you’ll find them listed in a guide at your disposal. We’d suggest you the sandy beach "La Rustica", reachable also by foot from our house, where you can bathe in one of the cleanest lakes in Europe: Mergozzo’s lake; and of course the ValGrande National Park , where you can spend a day of trekking in the largest natural area in Italy, but also an open-air museum of the ancient civilizations of the Alps.
