At over 800 m above sea level, the Altenau district of Torfhaus is one of the highest places in the Harz and enchants its visitors with a magnificent view of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz at 1,142 m. The settlement was once founded by peat cutters who worked in the nearby raised bogs. Today it is an ideal entry point into the network of hiking trails and the Harzer Hexenstieg, which crosses the Harz Mountains from west to east over 97 km.

Numerous well-signposted hiking trails of different lengths lead through the Harz National Park. Mountain bikers can start here on tours of the routes of the "Volksbank Arena Harz", and if you haven't brought your own bike with you, you can easily rent a mountain bike or e-bike here. The small town is also a fantastic starting point for motorcyclists for the most beautiful trips. In winter, Torfhaus is a popular local destination for downhill and cross-country skiers as well as sledging enthusiasts: some beautiful cross-country trails, a tow lift for skiers and a toboggan lift exclusively for sledders promise plenty of variety
